The Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute for Mental Health Education (NRCI) was created as a reflection of love for Naomi. This love has found expression through a commitment to combating the stigma of mental illness. The proceeds of Naomi's estate and contributions from family members, friends and generous donors have helped the institute produce our annual mental health conferences, conferences and workshops within the Latino and African American communities for professionals, consumers, individuals and families affected by mental illness. NRCI has supported activities including a teen essay contest on topics related to mental health issues, annual post-doctoral fellowship for a clinical psychology student at The Chicago School and an acclaimed anti-stigma film for teens developed by Dr. Fred Miller of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare that has been featured on PBS. New Foundation Center (formerly WilPower) has a pragmatic belief in the potential of people who have serious mental illness - a potential to chart a direction to recovery; to develop new skills and achieve goals; to solve problems in a real-world environment; and to contribute to their communities. We help over 250 people live well by providing psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery services at our center in Northfield. The School Solution is an educational consulting practice specializing in helping families find residential placement for their struggling child or young adult. After every resource has been tried at home, it is important to find a placement with the specific therapeutic, educational and family support for the child or young adult to begin experiencing success and growth. Our specialty is finding the right hospital, therapeutic wilderness, residential treatment center, therapeutic boarding school, specialty boarding school, or transitional program to fit the needs of the family. Karen Mabie is the owner and founder of The School Solution; she is both a school psychologist and a Certified Educational Planner. She visits 60 to 80 schools and programs every year.


THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO BIPOLAR DISORDER & SCHIZOPHRENIA FAMILY GENETIC STUDIES

The purpose of this study is to find out more about how genes influence whether people with Bipolar I Disorder benefit from different drugs. Genes are the material passed down from one generation to the next that determine things like eye color and hair color. Investigators throughout the United States are collaborating on this research study in an effort to identify genes that affect the response to two medications commonly used for bipolar disorder: lithium and valproate (Depakote(TM)). The ultimate goal of this research would be to develop a DNA test that would help doctors select the best medications for patients. All treatment and participation in this study takes place on the University of Chicago's beautiful Hyde Park Campus. Participants receive nominal payment throughout the course of the study for completing a diagnostic interview, completing periodic assessments, and providing a one-time blood sample.
